BW: Conventions of a film opening - Suspiria (Argento, 1977)

Suspiria is an Italian horror film from 1977 that was directed by Dario Argento.
Opening sequence starts at 01:25

Sound...
> Sinister sounding music with a sort of snarling/breathing sound in it - makes audience feel uneasy and sets up the film's themes.
> Conventional use of the sound of thunder.
> When airport doors open the sinister music starts and stops when the doors close. This suggests that there's something going on outside that's a bit dodgy or supernatural.
> Silence, save for the howl of the wind outside relaxes audience and makes the audience focus more on the visuals.
> Selective sound used when the windows suddenly swing open. This shocks the audience as it juxtaposes the relaxed silence before
> Heavy, evil sounding breathing as the camera zooms out and away from the window suggests to the audience that the character is being watched by something dark and mysterious lurking somewhere outside.

Camera techniques...
> If you look closely at the bottom left corner at 03:28 there is a ghosts face which if noticed, makes the viewer think that the character is in danger from the ghost behind her or the unknown and quite evasive taxi driver.
> Tracking shot of car driving through the forest and the car's headlights reveal the shadow of something against a tree which makes the audience take a small 'step back'.
> Zoom in on door which suggests that there is a strange or unpleasant aura surrounding the place.
>The use of a low angle when the girl is hanging (near end of clip) makes it seem as if the audience is on the ground looking up at her.

Face in the bottom left corner
   Editing...
> The use of a slow cutting rate gives the audience the false pretense that everything is fine.
> However, when the girl is getting hanged and the glass breaks the conventional use of a fast cutting rate emphasises the chaos and disorder.

The hanging scene
    Mise-en-scene...
> Conventional use of rain, thunder and lightning.
> Conventional use of an old building and a forest.
> Typically much blood used when girl is getting killed.
> A young woman in a foreign country connotes vulnerability and helplessness.
> Agitated character shows vulnerability when compared to the other woman who's calm and doesn't find anything wrong.
