I, Michael, am planning to create a soundtrack for our horror opening using the music software "CuBase" from the music department at school. The soundtrack will consist of a bass pedal drone and a few high pitch violin scratches, to make it sound eerie and slightly psychedelic. The music will build up until one of the boys picks up the artifact, white noise is heard prior to silence.
In our original idea, the organ plays a melancholy and dark sequence and the boy on his phone gets scared the candles burn out and the title screen comes up. In our alternative ending (which we will use IF permission for the organ is not given) we will build up the music again until the boys throat gets slit open (no blood scene, as it is from behind). The boy on the floor, who was uncontious wakes up to see the killer above him, ready to kill him. A good song to use to interpret the dizzyness of the fainted character is "The Voice of Necam" by Steve Hackett as it uses old circus music, that is often used in other thriller films for the same reason, to create a sense of discomfort.
The song starts at 3:40, it is also ideal as Steve Hackett music has a small target audience, therefore the song is almost unknown.
We are going to include little dialogue, only enough to drive the plot, the soundtrack and other sound effects will increase tention, therefore less need for dense dialogue. The dialogue we record will be straight from the camera as opposed to using a microphone. Diagetic sounds of surroundings also add to the enigma.
Our non-diagetic sounds will consist of sound effects made on CuBase or presets from the schools shared area. We are concidering to use a "WHITE NOISE" sound effect and perhaps light whispering before the protagonist picks up the artifact.
